The eyes are the window to your soul

…is something that I firmly believe, in a manner of speaking. Did you know that your eyes can tell us a lot about what’s going on in your body? For instance: -

  • Glaucoma
  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • High/low blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Brain tumours

We’re all guilty of it. If you don’t wear spectacles, or perhaps even if you do and you’re not having any problems, you just don’t think about getting your eyes tested. Life gets in the way, time flies by and before you know it, it’s been 5, 10 or sometimes even 20+ (yes! I’ve known this happen!) years since your last eye test. Then gradually you start to have issues…

Bad eyes or short arms?

  • Perhaps you can’t see the quiz questions on your favourite TV gameshow anymore?
  • Or you struggle to see the sports scores in the top left hand corner of the screen?
  • Maybe you fear your arms are getting shorter because you can’t hold things far enough away to read them now?
  • Can you only read for 20 minutes before your eyes tire and/or your vision blurs?
  • Do you find driving at night difficult/tedious?
  • Do your eyes feel irritated and/or gritty?
  • Do they ache?

…and only THEN do you think to yourself “maybe I should get my eyes tested?”

Well, have you ever heard the saying “closing the stable door after the horse has bolted?"

Closing the stable door!

An eye examination isn’t just about whether you can see or not, although that’s admittedly a significant part of it. It also includes a general “health check” that can pick up early signs of eye disease (as well as the conditions mentioned above), before you’re aware of any symptoms. Certainly with eye-related disorders such as glaucoma and AMD, early diagnosis is the key to slowing the progression of these sight-threatening disorders.

Optometrists recommend that most people should get their eyes tested every two years. However, in some circumstances, they may recommend more frequent NHS sight tests; for example, if you: -

  • Are a child wearing glasses
  • Have diabetes
  • Are aged 40 or over and have a family history of glaucoma
  • Are aged 70 or over

So, if you haven’t had your eyes tested within the past two years, do it, NOW!
